Pitt County Schools Exceptional Children's PreK Program

The Exceptional Children’s Pre-K (EC Pre-K) Program serves children ages three through five who are in need of specially designed instruction and determined eligible for exceptional children services. Services are provided based on the child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) that is developed to support the needs of the individual child. The program provides early intervention support and services to children with disabilities in order to prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond. Pitt County Schools EC Pre-K Program services include: 

• A referral & evaluation process to aid in the identification of preschool age children (3-5 years old) who are suspected of having delays in learning, social-emotional skills, and/or atypical behaviors
• Upon completing the referral & evaluation process, preschool age children who are determined as eligible according North Carolina guidelines will:
• be provided special education services based on the child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) that is developed to support the needs of the individual child
• be placed in the EC Pre-K program in the setting that best meets the educational needs of the child
• receive related services (if needed) to support their educational goals including speech therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and/or transportation.
• be provided these services at no cost
• Transition support for students from preschool to kindergarten
• Supports and resources for families
• Provide community resources to families

*Under IDEA Part B 619, our program supports state and local efforts to ensure that all eligible children are identified, experience seamless program transitions, are served in inclusive environments to the extent appropriate and experience positive outcomes. EC PreK Inclusion Program

The EC Pre-K Program offers an Inclusion Program—a general education classroom where students with and without disabilities learn together. Our classrooms celebrate diversity and the unique contributions each student brings, and they are designed to meet a wide range of individualized needs. Each class is taught by a licensed Birth-Kindergarten teacher. Please note that for students without disabilities, Inclusion Pre-K slots are fee based (tuition fees and policy are posted below).
