Credit by Demonstrated Mastery
In Pitt County Schools, Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) will allow students to have the opportunity to show a deep understanding of content and processes in most standard-level courses during the spring semester of the upcoming school year. This understanding will be shown through a multi-phase process which will include a paper and pencil examination and a product. Student work on each element will be assessed to determine if it reaches the level necessary to receive course credit. Students who demonstrate mastery will receive course credit, a grade of "P" (Pass) but no quality points towards graduation.
Credit by Demonstrated Mastery is intended to help students who can demonstrate complete course understanding by issuing course credit without seat time. The CDM process provides academic opportunities for students to go well beyond the minimum requirements for graduation and opens doors for them to pursue advanced course placement.
Basic Timeline for the CDM Application and Approval Process:
Fall 2023 (CDM for the Spring 2024 semester)

August - Accept Applications - Applications due by August 31st
September - CDM Phase 1 Testing - Sept. 17 - October 14th
October - Report testing results by Oct. 24th (Students who qualify for Phase 2 can begin Artifact process)
Late November - Student presents artifacts to the district review panel, provides recommendation for CDM, adjust the schedule
December - Provide an opportunity for the appeal process
Spring 2024 (for CDM for the Fall 2025 semester)
January - Accept Applications - Applications due by January 18th
February - CDM Phase 1 Testing - February 15 - March 12
March - Report testing results by March 10th (Students who qualify for Phase 2 can begin the Artifact process)
Late April - Student presents artifact to the district review panel, provides a recommendation for CDM, adjusts the schedule
May - Provide an opportunity for the appeal process
Step 1: Student Family Agreement Application
- Families interested in perusing Credit by Demonstrated Mastery must complete the Student Family Agreement Application and submit it to your child’s school.
- Families are highly encouraged to have a conversation with the school guidance counselor about the advantages and consequences of CDM.
Step 2: Student Tested (Student Documentation Form)
Phase 1 will include an examination to establish my mastery of the foundational skills and content this course/subject requires.
- Student must earn a Level V “superior” scale score on the appropriate state assessment, EOC or a 90% correct on the appropriate local exam. "The minimum qualifying score for Phase I assessments for all non-EOC courses is 90%."
- The student has only one attempt to pass the exam.
- Prior to the exam, the student may review the content standards for the course or subject area that he/she is seeking to demonstrate mastery at www.ncpublicschools.org
- If the applicant scores a Level V or 94% or higher on pretesting, the student will move on to Phase 2. If the student does not earn a Level V or 94% correct, he/she will not have the opportunity to earn CDM for the requested course.
Phase 2: Student Artifact
- The student will be asked to produce an artifact that reflects a deep understanding of the content standards, including the ability to apply the skills and knowledge expected at the end of the course.
- As part of this artifact, the student may be required to give a presentation, create a project, or take part in an interview as evidence of my abilities.
- The CDM Review Panel will make a recommendation if the student can earn CDM. If the student is successful, he/she will earn a “Pass” on the transcript toward graduation. No grade or quality points will be granted and the “Pass” will not be included in the GPA.
